3 Storytelling Tips for Marketing a Boring Product / Service at the Holidays

We’re not here to call your baby ugly. But let’s face it, if you’re reading this article, you must think your product or service isn’t the sexiest, easiest to market. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t good potential. Storytelling can help enliven even the most common products. Through these marketing suggestions you can finish the holiday season strong and carry that momentum through next year.

Storytelling Tips for Marketing Boring Products and Services

Find the Hero

Your product or service—no matter how (traditionally) uninspiring—helps someone. Just figure out who and how. For instance, if you own a 5-minute oil change business, it may not be the sort of thing people get excited about, but you offer a very convenient service.

Who do you help get back on the road quickly? Is it the busy mom running carpool or the executive salesperson between appointments? You are helping someone get back to what they’re meant to do safely and quickly. While they may roll their eyes at the need for getting their oil changed and put it off for several miles, your quick service makes a big difference in their day. Because of you, they can do something amazing. Tell their story.

Focus on What Your Hero Wants

Continuing with the value of story, think about what your hero/customer wants to do more than anything else. How do you assist with that? This goes beyond helping them with something they must do and revolves around what they want to do. That’s the stuff dreams are made of. For instance, your quick oil change means the busy mom is on time to pick up the kids, which is important on its own. But what she really wants is a few minutes before that to read a couple of pages of her favorite book. Your quick—in car—oil change gives her that coveted alone time providing a respite she secretly wishes could last a little longer.

You could have some fun with a holiday marketing campaign around that (escape from in-laws/family/out-of-town guests for five minutes, escape from responsibilities, etc). And it’s something a lot of people can identify with.

Sculpt Testimonials Around Your Stories

Once you have your hero’s story drafted, think about how you might use that to solicit testimonials. If you send out a customer survey, for instance, don’t ask the generic “how was your service.” Instead, ask “what did we help you escape from today?” or “how will you use the extra five minutes of your day?” These questions are unique enough to evoke a response. You likely will get some great stories for your testimonials.

The power of story makes anything more interesting. Look at what Tolkien did with a lost ring or Rowling did with school. It’s time you embrace the power of story outside of your “About Us” page.

An Easy Way to Get More Customers in December

Let's face it. Some people are finished with their holiday shopping. But for those of us who are left, we are starting to get a little nervous. We think about the people on our list and all the work that is left to be done before the big day, and most of us feel overwhelmed. This is an excellent time to provide the kind of helpful guidance that will create an army of loyal customers for you. It just takes a little marketing finesse.

So how do you get loyal customers in the last few weeks of the holiday season? You give them what they need in a way that is accessible to them and easy to understand. Now let's unpack that.

Labels Matter

No, we are not talking about the kind of labels on food that require a dictionary to understand. The labels that can help you build a loyal customer base are niche labels. You may even think of them as stereotypes, but they can be incredibly effective in helping potential customers see that you have what they need.

Begin by looking at what you sell and who it's good for. Who benefits from and/or enjoys what you sell? The more specific you are, the more effective your posts and marketing will be. Use what you know about your products or services and speak directly to those who will enjoy (or desperately need) them. For instance, if you own a cleaning service you probably use marketing copy like “Are you busy? We can clean your house for you.” This is a good start because it addresses a pain point that someone has, but you can do even more for the holidays.

To drive more sales, use copy that gets their attention and speaks to their immediate needs. Tie it into the season to drive action now such as, “Dreading that holiday visit from the in-laws? House never clean enough and tired of the criticism? Our detail-oriented cleaning crew can ensure your home is perfect. Even your mother-in-law will be impressed." This copy provides a little levity and helps a stressed person realize they don't have to do it themselves. You can help.

The key to making this kind of marketing work is identifying someone who needs your products or services and the why behind those needs. The “why” can even be a little comical like the example of using the stereotype about a hard-to-please mother-in-law. Even if potential customers have a wonderful relationship with their mother-in-law, they will acknowledge that a claim like that must mean you provide an exacting service.

One word of caution when using stereotypes: never use any stereotypes about race, sexual orientation, or anything that could be derogatory or hurtful.

Speaking to your ideal audience and conveying why your products/services can help with their struggles will drive action. No one acts when they have questions. Be clear about who and how you help.

In the last few weeks leading up to the holidays, time is at a premium. Shoppers don’t have the bandwidth to give a lot of thought to what they will buy in the eleventh hour. Instead, they’ll be moved by the easy decisions; the items and services that grab them. If you are explicit in your marketing about how you meet a need or what buyers you are perfect for, you will sell a greater number of products or services.

4 Things to Do For Your Small Business in December

The holiday shopping season is in full tilt right now and while you’re busy analyzing your Black Friday and Cyber Monday revenue, there are a few things you want to do to capture those December holiday dollars.

Refresh Your Website

If you still have Black Friday info up there, it’s time to strip it down and focus on last-minute shoppers. You want to ensure everyone knows the last days to order from you to meet shipping deadlines as well as what your availability is for pick-up or services. If you have hard-to-find items available, let people know. If you have space left for reservations, offer that on your front page. Websites are designed to feature the most up-to-date info so make sure you are using that space to drive the most sales.

Make an Offer

December has a way of getting away from people. We enter the month thinking we have an entire month to shop and before we know it, we’re missing ordering deadlines and holiday shopping at a 24-hour grocery store as we head to a friend’s house. That’s why December is the perfect time to roll out a special deal. It doesn’t have to be a loss leader. People are already in a need-to-buy situation. It’s just a little something extra to make them feel the value behind what they’re getting. That could be a coupon for a free dessert with every $100 gift card or special tote bags for purchases. Use a bonus offer with purchase to drive more sales.

Launch a Social Media Giveaway

A quick way to build your following (and your email list) is by launching a social media giveaway. Post on social media and encourage people to sign up for your newsletter/discount list. Then pull a name from that list and provide them with a gift card for your business.

Why not just limit the contest to social media posts and shares? Why require them to sign up for your mailing list? Because you don’t own the information on social media. You need a way to contact your fans outside of social sites.

Highlight Past Purchases or Services

A confused mind doesn’t act. You want to be clear about what you offer and what your customers receive. December is a great time to showcase what others have purchased or the services you have rendered. Spotlight clients. Show gift baskets or things you designed for them. When people see options, it’s easier for them to make decisions. Difficulty kills more sales than cost.

December is the most frantic part of Small Business Season. But it’s also an excellent time to help people when they need it most. You can make a big impression on customers when they’re feeling stressed and frantic. Do what you can to make holiday shopping easier on them and you’ll end up with fantastic end-of-year revenue.

Dear valued Chamber Members,

Business needs have changed and evolved over the past five years and the Sierra Vista Area Chamber of Commerce is changing and evolving as well. We are excited to announce that at the April 21 ^st , 2022, Special Board of Directors meeting, the Sierra Vista Area Chamber of Commerce, Board of Directors, unanimously approved the motion to transition to Membership Levels as of July 1 ^st , 2022*. We are committed to bringing you the benefits your business needs, now and in the future.

At the Sierra Vista Area Chamber of Commerce, our Membership Committee spent the last 8 months researching business needs and Chamber memberships. Through that research, we realized our previous membership categories have become less suitable to the changing business needs. For example, the “type of business” membership category. A home-based business used to be a small one-person venture. Now, large businesses operate virtually from anywhere in the world. The business world continues to adapt and change today. A significant change in many businesses was the number of employees. It fluctuated greatly during the pandemic. Some businesses increased the number of employees due to demand and others decreased the number due to increased efficiency. At the Chamber, we realized our “# of employee” based memberships discouraged businesses from growing. That’s not who we are. The Chamber encourages growth in our community and our membership levels will now reflect that. Times have changed and we’ve adapted.

There are 4 Membership levels to choose from: Civic, Business, Investor, and Premier. Our Corporate Membership levels are also available to all businesses interested in increasing the level of investment in their business and in the community. Choose from Copper, Silver, Gold, or Diamond levels.

Copper Queen Community Hospital, located in Bisbee, Arizona, has a rich heritage, dating back to the 1880s when it operated as part of the mining community, so key to the history of Bisbee. This 25 bed small acute care hospital has been striving to provide convenient, affordable health care to the area it serves for over 125 years.

The hospital provides a broad range of inpatient and outpatient services, including acute care; outpatient surgery; 24-hour emergency services; cardio-pulmonary services; rehabilitation services; home health care; an occupational medicine department; a full-service laboratory; and diagnostic imaging which includes a state-of-the-art fluoroscopy unit, flat plate basic radiology unit, Dexa-Scan bone density unit, spiral CT scanner, mammography services, ultrasound, on-site experienced and professional radiologists, and teleradiology for speedy diagnostic capability.

The local medical staff includes 23 physicians which 12 are local fully active physicians and 11 are consultants. At end of 2009, the hospital was designated as a Level IV Trauma Center from the Arizona Department of Health Services, Bureau of EMS and Trauma System, allowing the facility to be able to support the state's Level I Trauma Centers by resuscitating and stabilizing a patient, then transferring a patient to a more appropriate trauma center based on a patient's injuries. Finally, over the past several years, the hospital has opened 3 Rural Health Clinics which are located in the communities of Bisbee, Douglas, and Palominas.

Choson Martial Arts is owned by Master Rafael Amill

Born and raised in Ponce, Puerto Rico, Master Amill grew-up in a middle class family. His mother was a stay at home mother and took care of the family and his father was well known in the community since he worked as a Federal Postal Worker. He was educated in an all nun and priest private catholic school until 6 ^th grade in which he was enrolled in a public elementary school. There he was exposed and later introduced to gangs, drugs, among other things. It was not until 1974, at the age of 15 ^th where he began his martial arts training at the YMCA. Since then, he has continous training it has done a lot of good throughout his life which has helped him with what is now commonly known as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder [ADHD].

In September 2002, he established Choson Martial Arts and began teaching privately. As a Universal Tang Soo Do Alliance Certified Master Instructor. He has a background not only in Tang Soo Do, but also in WTF Olympic Style Taekwondo, Hapkido, Chanbara, Kenjutsu, Iaido, Iaijutsu, and Tai Chi.

Korean Masters trained him in the arts of Taekwondo and Hapkido while performing military duties in South Korea (1982-83 & 1996-97), which is one of the reasons that Choson Martial Arts adheres to so many Korean customs and traditions. He has strong competition experience by participating in many local, state, national and international competitions. Master Amill has been teaching the arts of Tang Soo Do and Taekwondo for the past 12 years. During that time he has been passing on his knowledge to students throughout Sierra Vista, Arizona.

The Choson era (1392-1910) of Korean history emphasized family values and the importance of education. In addition, the Choson Dynasty was regarded as the "Last Traditional Kingdom" before the onslaught of modern culture. This is the reason why the name "Choson" was selected as a symbolic representation of the emphasis on education and family values, which are stressed in class.

Lucretia Free was the youngest of three daughters born to Lawson and Earlene Mays in rural Ohio. Lucretia graduated from high school at the age of 16 and received her undergraduate degree in marketing at 19.

Make a Friend....Make a Difference.

Mentoring is a concept that is age old and played a role in our nation’s history. The expectations were to have children trained and tutored with necessary skills to survive and prosper in life. Unfortunately, we’ve seen erosion of many family structures over the decades that leaves young people to figure out life on their own -– often with destructive results.

The mission they have at Mentoring Cochise Kid’s (MCK), is to match quality adult mentors with at-risk youth in the community. Statistically, these young “at-risk” people are more susceptible to delinquent behavior, alcohol abuse, teen pregnancy, and dropping out of school. When they match these boys and girls, ages 6-17, with responsible, caring adults who are committed to sustaining a consistent partnership for at least one year, it promotes positive change. Close relationships allow the youth to experience an in-depth alternative way of living that may lead to a quality life into their future.

The MCK studies and philosophy for early intervention as prevention have created an inexpensive alternative to tax-supported treatment programs. A child can be supported in MCK for a full year at just $1500 compared to $250,000 per year for residential drug/alcohol treatment and $70,000 per year for incarceration.

Focused on being different from other mentorship programs, MCK accepts only young people who have been referred by recognized community agencies such as the juvenile justice system, social services, and schools. Occasionally there is an exception when a referral comes through a parent or guardian. They serve the neediest youths in the community who are facing a combination of risk factors. The relationship developed with a healthy adult who mentors them may become the key element in redirecting their lives.

When a “match” is made, the mentor makes a commitment to spend at least three hours a week regularly with the mentee. Visiting the mentee’s home, school, and referring agency allows the mentor to become better acquainted with them. In addition to their three hours per week together, the mentor and mentee attend group activities sponsored by MCK.

This part of the strategy to success in relationships is at the core of the MCK program. They are committed to recruiting, training, and sustaining willing, committed, responsible adults who care about making a difference in the life of one boy or girl. Both the child and the adult benefit greatly from this unique and dynamic relationship – and so does the community.

The Sierra Vista Community Theatre was founded in 2019 with the goal of providing a safe place for everyone in Southeastern Cochise County to enjoy and participate in the performing arts. The Sierra Vista Community Theatre promotes the arts through live performances, education, workshops, and community involvement. We are an all-volunteer, community funded, not-for-profit organization and all are welcome here. Thank you for your support !

During the annual production season, which runs Jan-Dec, the theatre will present, at a minimum: five full length plays, two children's productions and one musical performance for our audience. FMI Defense, LLC, is based in Southern Pines, North Carolina and works with Military Family Support Organizations such as the US Army’s Directorate of Family Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) and the US Air Force’s Force Support Squadrons (FSS) at military golf courses across the country. FMI Defense was founded by a retired Army Lieutenant Colonel and is proud to provide a significant portion of its revenue to these organizations. It is the goal of FMI Defense to support U.S. Military golf and the mission of the Military Family Support Organizations across all services to better the lives of military personnel and their families.

FMI Defense has been placing high quality, tournament style scoreboards at public, semi-private and private golf courses for years and has now expanded its efforts to include the U.S. Military. Working with the installations, FMI Defense places scoreboards at military golf courses and sells advertising opportunities directly on the scoreboard.

FMI Defense provides the scoreboard to the military at no cost and shares a significant portion of all advertising revenue. Recover, Revitalize, Reopen, Restart

Now is the time to merge what worked before, with what works now.

Recovery. Reopening. Reenergize. Reinvigorate. Revitalize. Restart. There are a lot of “Re’s” happening right now. But, are we actually redoing anything? Or are we starting over? Are we each doing business in a whole new way? Kudos to all of your ingenious insights that sustained you through the shutdown of so many businesses. Well done! However, we are still in uncharted waters. We are headed into a recovery. When as the last time we did that? Do we even know how? Now is not the time to “return” to what worked before the pandemic. Now is the time to merge what worked before, with what works now. And what do we predict will work in the future?

So, as we move toward the “Re’s” be aware that your ingenious ideas may be just what your business needed. If this pandemic has taught us anything it is that we realized that we are ingenious, we can adapt and that business practices do change, and it can happen very quickly. This leads us to forward thinking. Forward thinking is a great skill to have. It is the “What If” questions we need to be asking ourselves about our business.

As we all ponder the new “What If’s” we need to keep in mind that there are actions we can take right now to help us each sustain our business through tough times, now and in the future. Do we have savings and how long will that sustain us? Have we built strong relationships with our customers? Have we explored all marketing options and are they bringing us the return on investment that we need? Are we a part of the vital networking channels that the business needs to grow? Does the community know who we are? Is our business relevant to our current and future customers?

What did we learn?

We weren’t prepared for the pandemic, but we can be prepared for the recovery, and we will recover. Are you prepared?

These are unprecedented times. Historic. Do you feel blindsided? If not, I am impressed. If you’re like the rest of us this COVID 19 pandemic threw us for a bit of a loop. My favorite words to my grandchildren are usually “What did we learn?”. Now I’m using those words on myself daily, and sometimes hourly. So… what did we learn?

I don’t know about you, but Google couldn’t tell me how to fix this. It couldn’t tell me what to expect, what to feel, or what to do. We have all had to use our brains, our imaginations, and our own creative nature…. Yes, you have that. Who knew?

We have been forced to think outside the box. So, what now? Once you are outside the box…in the words of Sharice Erby Castle “Crush the Box!” Don’t get back in. The box is confining and limiting. You have escaped it! It no longer serves the same purpose. You have moved on and created a new way of working, of living, of learning. You did that! Well done! Oddly enough this is a great time to pat yourself on the back. This is also a time to reflect on what was working, what is working, and what we’ve learned to help us secure the future for our business, our family, and our community.

I am not making light of the extreme difficulties that so many have been going through, but we must look towards recovery. We weren’t prepared for the pandemic, but we can be prepared for the recovery, and we will recover. Are you prepared? Have you started working on your recovery plan? The Sierra Vista Area Chamber of Commerce is partnering with the City of Sierra Vista, the Small Business Development Center, the Arizona Regional Economic Foundation, and Hispanic Chamber of Commerce on a recovery plan for our community. That includes our local businesses, but your own recovery plan is essential. Stay tuned for more ways that we will be supporting and working with our local businesses as we look toward a brighter future.
